A survey among 8,500 young independent travellers found that over 50% book their trips online. The research, which is part of a global study conducted by World Youth & Student Educational Travel Confederation, showed the proportion has risen five times in five years. And 80% of young holiday-makers use the internet to search for information before departing on their trip.
According to the inquiry, the average spend per trip has increased by 40% since 2002 to 1,915 euros, of which around 1,140 euros is to cover costs once in the destination. The most popular destinations for young travellers are France, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and the United States. Almost three quarters travel to explore, learn a language, volunteering or studying abroad and 80% say they return more appreciate and tolerant of other cultures as a result.

UK tourism to gain £2.1bn from 2012 Olympics
A publication of VisitBritain and VisitLondon research revealed the tourism benefits from the 2012 Olympic Games in London are estimated to be worth up to £2.1 billion. The Oxford Economics tourism impact study on the 2012 Games forecasts that the London Games will generate tourism gains totalling £2.3 billion (at 2006 prices). Once allowances for displacement of visitors are made, the contribution is reduced to £2.1 billion for the UK.
Tourism minister Margaret Hodge said: "Providing better service to tourists and improving accommodation are among key issues to be tackled to ensure the UK tourism industry capitalises on the 2012 Olympic Games in London".
"London 2012 is a huge opportunity for the UK tourism industry. In five years time millions of visitors will be coming here for the first time and we want them to come back time and time again - and bring their family and friends”, she added.
