P&O Ferries plans to introduce the largest-ever cross channel ferries on the Dover-Calais route. The company has ordered two 210m long ships, which will be the largest vessels capable of fitting into facilities in the channel ports.
Each of the two 49,000 tonne ferries will carry up to 1,500 passengers and will replace Pride of Dover and Pride of Calais in December 2010 and September 2011 respectively.
The vessels will cost £285m and will be built by Finnish shipbuilder Aker Yards.
P&O Ferries claims the two new vessels will offer "significant advances" in fuel efficiency.
