Japan Airlines to make Asia's first biofuel flight

Japan Airlines (JAL) announced on Monday it planned to make a test flight powered by biofuel by the end of March 2009.

The demonstration is a part of an international drive to reduce CO2 emissions from aviation and will be the first biofuel jet flight in Asia.

For the test, JAL will use a Boeing 747-300 with engines made by Pratt & Whitney. The aircraft will have no passengers on board and will take off from an unnamed airport in Japan.

Tokyo-based Japan Airlines will be the first Asian carrier to make such a flight and the fourth worldwide after Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Air New Zealand and Continental Airlines.
